oday's state-of-the-art doors
and windows save energy and,
over time, save money for
green-conscious homeowners.
Major advances in windows began
about 15 years ago when manufactur-
ers replaced single pane and double
pane windows with triple panes,
upgraded materials and added chem-
icals to ensure that heat is retained in
the winter.
The best insulated windows
contain a Low-E glass coating, the
industry norm, says Todd Upton,
president of Dillman & Upton Lumber
in Rochester. "Low-E glass is smart
glass," he says.
Low-E is shorthand for low emis-
sivity, describing how much heat
is radiated from a material or sub-
stance. Low E-glass has a special
coating that reflects infrared light,
keeping heat inside in winter and
outside in the summer. It also reflects

ultraviolet light that can cause furni-
ture upholstery to fade.
To make the consumer's job easier,
Energy Star has approved specific
doors and windows for home use
at energystar.gov. All Energy Star
approved windows include three or
more panes for greater energy effi-
ciency, increased impact resistance
and sound insulation. Energy Star is
an international standard for energy
efficient consumer products. It was
created by the United States in 1992.
Upton says the top-rated windows
cost 10 percent more than standard
windows. Energy Star math indicates
that the extra cost could be worth it.
Looking at the east north central
part of the United States, Michigan's
location, Energy Star found that
through the first eight months of
2007 a homeowner who upgraded
his windows to double pane from
single pane in a 2,000-square-foot,
single-story, detached home with
300 square feet of window area
saved $377. A homeowner who
