Wayne State Leader

Richard Bernstein of Birmingham has
been elected chairman of the Wayne
State University Board of Governors in
Detroit. He is completing an eight-year
term that runs through 2010.
"I absolutely love Wayne State,"
said Bernstein, who has an under-
graduate degree from the University
of Michigan and a law degree from
Northwestern University. "It is the
most critical school in the state; it
Richard Bernstein
ultimately provides an opportunity to
working-class and middle-class people
who otherwise would not have one. That's what's critical."
Bernstein is an attorney with the Farmington Hills-based
Bernstein Law Firm, which represents victims of personal injury
or disability discrimination. He serves on the boards of not-for-

world whose work will be exhibited at the New Museum in New
York City April 8-June 14.
Keller, a former Detroiter,
and collaborator Nik
Kosmas are known as
AIDS-3D. Their work
"OMG obelisk" (2007)
was selected from thou-
sands submitted online to
more than 200 curators,
writers, teachers, critics,
bloggers and fellow art-

Keller and Kosmas
study and work in
Daniel Keller
Germany. Keller is the son
of Laurie Brown and Eric
Keller of Ferndale.
The exhibit, funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for
the Visual Arts, is based on the idea that young artists pro-
duce the most innovative work. The exhibition is titled "The
Generational: Younger Than Jesus." To enter, artists had to be
born after 1976.
Keller grew up in Ferndale and attended Workmen's Circle
and Roeper School.
He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago BFA
program (2004-2006), Universitat Der Kiinste Berlin (2006-
2007) and Stadelschule Frankfurt (2007-2008).

New York Bash
After the success of an outreach event for Detroiters living in Los
Angeles last July, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
will host "Young Detroit in New York" for young Detroiters now
living in New York City.
The social gathering kicks off at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at the
Brasserie 81/2 in midtown Manhattan.
More than 250 transplanted Detroiters attended the L.A. bash.
It featured a talk with actor/director/writer/producer Mike
Binder at the Stone Rose Lounge in Hotel Sofitel.
Federation is seeking e-mail addresses of Detroiters, ages 21-40,
living in New York City. Send the information to davis@jfmd.org .

profit organizations and teaches a political science course in social
activism at the University of Michigan. The State Bar of Michigan
has honored him for his pro bono and public service work.
"The Wayne State student is someone who desperately wants an
education and will fight hard to get it," Bernstein told the JN. "Our
students, for the most part, are working while attending school. In
many situations, they have two jobs to pay for tuition. I love being
part of an institution whose students are striving to overcome
challenges in order to get an education and enjoy a better future."
Wayne State has 35,000 undergraduate students, including older
professionals. The economic downturn is prompting the board to
find new models and approaches to how the campus operates. No
aspect of campus activity is immune from re-examination. "We'll
embrace this because we don't have a choice," Bernstein said. "But
with challenge and adversity comes incredible opportunity."
