Still Time To Give
On behalf of the Jewish Federation, we
would like to thank the Jewish News
for your cover story"Lifeline" (Feb. 5,
page All) detailing the harsh economic
realities facing our community, and the
efforts being taken by Federation and its
partner agencies to help families in need.
We were so pleased to see the com-
munity turn out in such numbers to
volunteer at our Super Sunday and
Campaign Countdown fundraising
events, which began on Feb. 8.
More than 550 volunteers raised
close to $500,000.
While the amount raised was impres-
sive, the job is not nearly done, and our
fundraising effort is not over. Our econ-
omy is still suffering with no short-term
hope of recovery. The number of fami-
lies in need continues to rapidly grow.
Gifts at any level are appreciated,
needed and crucial in the survival of

one to another and gifts to the poor." In that

spirit, we send parcels (Mishloach Manot) with at

least 2 kinds of treats to our friends, our family,

and our community.

Join the Detroit Jewish Community
in this fun, family day of caring and sharing!

An Inspiration
The Cover Story "We Were Relentless"
by Senior Writer Shelli Liebman
Dorfman (Feb. 12, page A15) captured
the essence of my son's spirit and how
he can serve as an inspiration to any-
one who meets him. His pugnacious
approach to succeed was brilliantly
brought out by the article.
My son Jordan was born profoundly
deaf, and we were told he would prob-
ably not be able to speak. Through a
lifelong struggle, he learned to speak
and currently is an inspirational
speaker. Overcoming the effects of
being deaf was a monumental task,
but for Jordan not insurmountable.
It is hard to express the amount of
situations that he faced in his life that
required the fortitude to push through.
He learned at a young age that self-
pity wouldn't help his cause. His
tough, resilient, never-say-die attitude
allowed him to become an extremely
confident man.
Jordan is an inspiration to everyone.
Many aspects of his daily life are a
challenge. Knowing Jordan's success
can influence everyone to fight hard
and never give up in the pursuit of
their dreams.

GirlForce: No Charge
We would like to thank the Jewish News
for the wonderful article ("Fit and
Jewish," Feb. 12, page B1) that featured
Hadassah's GirlForce program at Hillel
Day School of Metropolitan Detroit.
The article, however, contains an
inference that warrants clarification.
Hadassah presents GirlForce free of
charge. It is one of the many corn-
munity service projects in which our
membership participates throughout
the year. Our GirlForce volunteers are
professional women committed to
promoting a healthier generation of
Jewish girls by enlightening them on
subjects about nutrition, Jewish values,
body image and the importance of
daily movement.
Amy Friedman, owner of Studio
A-Center for Performing Arts, is the
most recent addition to GirlForce and
has transformed and energized the
program. She also helped Hillel's staff
adapt the program for their boys.
We gratefully acknowledge our
other volunteers who contributed to
this successful program: Judi Schram,
Susie Kamen, Lisa Weinbaum, Emily
Camiener, Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny,
Rabbi Rachel Shere, Jenni Mentzer,
Rebecca Schlussel, Bonnie Coleman,
Marcy Feldman, Lauren Rouff, Susan
Belen, Helen Garden and Val Leebove.
