A

mid strong pressure from
Palestinian advocates to
cancel this weekend's per-
formances of the Batsheva Dance
Company at the Power Center at the
University of Michigan, University
Musical Society (UMS) President
Kenneth Fischer wrote in a letter to
Society supporters that "UMS will pro-
ceed with the Batsheva presentations
as scheduled!'
"I understand and appreciate the
strong feelings people have about
the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and
their desire to express those feel-
ings," Fischer wrote in his Feb. 4 letter.
"UMS has strong feelings, too, such as
our unwavering commitment to use
the arts a vehicle for bringing people
together, not for dividing them, and to
our general inclusion policy of 'every-
body in, nobody out!"
In fact, UMS' Performing Arts of the
Arab World series during the 2008-
2009 season features performers from
10 Arab countries and territories and
the rest of season brings artists from
23 other countries.
Fischer informed supporters that
for the past month he had had been
receiving 6-10 e-mails daily from
throughout the country calling for
the dance performances Feb. 14-15
to be cancelled. If the performances
go as scheduled, he wrote, the groups
behind the e-mail campaign say they
will boycott the events.
"At my direction',' Fischer wrote,
"UMS Director of Production Doug
Witney is handling matters of secu-
rity for the Batsheva presentations
just as he did very effectively for

the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra
performance in November, when the
same groups called on UMS to cancel
the performance and held a demon-
stration outside Hill Auditorium when
we proceeded with the event. There
were no incidents.
"I'm confident that Doug is coor-
dinating everything that needs to
be done with all of the appropriate
parties at the University and in the
community and that proper security
measures are being put in place for the
Batsheva performances."
According to the UMS Web site,
since its founding in 1964 by Martha
Graham and Baroness Batsheva de
Rothschild, Batsheva Dance Company
has become one of the most influential
cultural role models in Israel, inter-
nationally renowned for pushing the
boundaries of cutting-edge dance with
intense energy, rich sensuality and a
culturally diverse dance language. Led
by Ohad Naharin since 1990, this con-
temporary dance company reels with
energy, adrenaline and force.
Robert Cohen, Jewish Community
Relations Council of Metropolitan
Detroit executive director, said, "Council
is strongly encouraging members of
the Detroit Jewish community to attend
these performances. The closer we can
get to sell out these performances, the
stronger support we can show to UMS,
the university and Israel:'
