How to Send Letters

We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We reserve the right to edit or reject letters. Letters of 225
words or less are considered first. Longer ones will be subject to trimming. Letter writers are limited
in frequency of publication. Letters must be original and contain the name, address and title of the
writer and a day phone number. Non-electronic copies must be hand signed. Send letters to the JN:
29200 Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield, MI 48034; fax (248) 304-8885; e-mail, letters®

The Way We Speak
Your article on the Feb. 10 election in
Israel ("Ready on the Right," Feb. 5,
page A21) was worthy of the bias one
finds in the general media. The article
uses the following loaded adjectives to
describe parties generally viewed to be
right of center: "hard line,""fervently
Orthodox,""national-religious," "hawks,"
"intransigent," "strident."
Perhaps you should use the following
adjectives to describe parties generally
viewed to be left of center: "pusillani-
mous,""wishy washy," "gutless," "mar-
ginally Jewish:' "anti-nationalist," "losers
of two wars."
Undoubtedly, the latter set of adjec-
tives would offend many of your read-
ers. Unfortunately, the set of adjectives
you chose to use offends another cadre
of readers.
Perhaps you could show more bal-
ance in the future.

Volunteer In Israel
Israel's recent war in Gaza with Hamas
yielded an unsurprising and gratifying
result for the Volunteers for Israel/Sar-El
organization. The day the war began,
the national help center began receiving
hundreds of inquiries via fax, phone and
e-mail. People from over the U.S. and
Canada as well as other countries, Jews
and gentiles, inquired as to how they
could help Israel and the Jewish people.
Within one day, more than 100 Young
Judaea young adults mobilized during
the time of need to volunteer while they
were in Israel. Normally, the VFI / Sar-El
program offers two- or three-week or

JNF Aids Terror Victims
New York — In response to the rocket
attacks that have plagued southern Israel
and the Israeli army's incursion into
Gaza, the Jewish National Fund unveiled
Operation Security Blanket: Southern
Israel.
The emergency campaign will provide
immediate relief for Israeli children and
their families living in areas under rocket
attack along the Gaza border.
Proceeds will:

indoor recreation center JNF is building
in Sderot.

longer opportunities to volunteer, but the
rules changed temporarily to allow one-
week programs because so many people
wanted to volunteer and could only get
away for a week.
The base commanders continually told
the volunteers that without the Sar-El
volunteers the work on the bases would
not have gotten done. Those that have
returned have expressed a real sense that
they contributed to Israel during this
urgent time.
Volunteers for Israel–USA (www.
vfi-usa.org; www.vfi-usa.org ) is associ-
ated with Sar-El, a non-profit organiza-
tion, which administers the program
in Israel. Volunteers typically spend
two or three weeks living and working
alongside Israelis at an army base, Israeli
Defense Forces warehouses, hospitals or
service bases. The program offers a way
to contribute to the State of Israel in a
very direct way.
I am the Volunteers for Israel national
coordinator and ambassador coordina-
tor as well as the regional officer for
Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin.
I am available to speak to groups and
individuals about my experiences with
the VFI/Sar-El program and how to
contribute (eskohl@comcast.net ; 248-
420-3729).
