n celebration of its 50th anni-
versary, the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan, in coopera-
tion with the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, will host the
Midwest debut of "From Haven to
Home a national touring exhibition
tracing more than 350 years of Jewish
life in America. The exhibit will be at
the Detroit Historical Museum from
May 6 through Aug. 30.
Created by the American Jewish
Historical Society, in cooperation
with the Library of Congress, "From
Haven to Home" chronicles the
American Jewish experience, focus-
ing on America as "Haven" — the
Jewish immigrant's refuge from per-
secution in countries abroad — to
America as "Home," the creation of
permanent Jewish communities in
the United States.
The national story and the
Michigan Jewish experience will be
brought to life through 16 two-sided
panels and displays.
"We are very proud to bring this
wonderful exhibition to Detroit:'
says Hannan Lis, who together with
his wife, Lisa, are chairpersons of
the Michigan From Haven to Home
exhibition. "The experiences of the
hundreds of thousands of Jews who
fled religious persecution, found
refuge and made this country their
home is a story that resonates with
all cultures and with all ages.
"This exhibit provides a glimpse
into the many obstacles these pio-
neers overcame and how Jewish
culture has shaped and formed who
we are as a nation — and religion
— today"
The event is also being chaired by
Eugene and Marcia Applebaum and
A. Alfred Taubman.
The exhibit will feature a special
section focusing on the history of
Michigan's Jewish culture. Docents
trained by the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan (JHS of MI) will
lead groups through the exhibit.
"We could think of no better
way to celebrate our 50th anniver-
sary than to bring this exhibition
to Detroit:' says Arnold Collens, co-
president of JHS of MI. "We all know
that by learning from the past, we
can prepare for the future."

The exhibition is one of the initia-
tives associated with the congres-
sionally recognized Commission
for Commemorating 350 Years of
American Jewish History and fea-
tures more than 200 reproductions of
American Judaic treasures from the
collections of the Library of Congress,
augmented by loans from cooperating
cultural institutions.
Among the artifacts are a letter
from the Hebrew Congregation of
Newport, R.I., to President George
Washington, and his letter in
response; and a copy of the hand-
written version of Emma Lazarus'
poem "The New Colossus:' which is
inscribed on the base of the Statue of
Liberty.
JHS of MI is planning several
events to coincide with the exhibition,
including a reception on May 5 and a
symposium featuring Judaic studies
educators from across the state.
Group tours are available. For
information, contact JHS of MI, (248)
