Israel On WSU Campus

Eleanor Kotov
Special to the Jewish News

Detroit

W

ayne State University has
a deep connection to the
Jewish community in
the Metro Detroit area. It only makes
sense that this campus becomes one
that understands Israel in a cultural
sense as well as how it contributes to
society.
Unfortunately, Wayne State
University is a campus that has a
somewhat anti-Israel reputation.
Through my efforts, as Hillel of Metro
Detroit's Grinspoon Israel advocacy
intern, I hope to bring about a more
positive view on Israel and promote
greater understanding of Israel as
a whole, as opposed to the way it is
viewed in the international media.
My job as the Grinspoon intern is to
advocate for Israel in a non-political
arena. I promote Israel's environmen-
tal, technological and humanitarian
contributions to society through dif-
ferent programs and events. One such
event was an Israel Fest earlier this
year, where I displayed examples of
Israel's aid to different countries as
well as important facts about what
Israel has done to help improve the
daily lives of its citizens and citizens
from around the world.
Additionally, I held events that
teach students about Israel's historical
roots via "Israel 101" sessions, hosting
groups such as StandWithUs and the
Zionist Organization of America.
For the current semester, I plan to
have a movie week which will be co-
hosted with several different student

organizations. Every day, a different
Israeli film will be played featuring
diverse cultural groups and how they
are part of Israeli society or are con-
nected to the Jewish culture.
My aim is to educate students in any
way possible; therefore, I also plan to
have a Birthright recruitment night
Feb. 21, which will be a night of meet-
ing potential Birthright participants
and having them sign up for a trip
that will consist of Metro Detroit area
Jewish students.
In addition to the events, I have
created a group called Cultural and
Historical Awareness of Israel (CHAI)
that gets students together in order to
discuss their views on Israel and learn
more about the diverse and multifac-
eted country that Israel is today. El
