"Israel is very dance-oriented:'
Fortis says. "We're very privileged
to have a large audience, with many
young people among them."
Batsheva, founded in 1964 by
Martha Graham and Baroness
Batsheva de Rothschild, is based in
Tel Aviv, where it now is supported by
government funds.
The senior troupe, which tours
internationally, books about 250 per-
formances annually. More than half of
the company dancers are Israeli, while
the rest are from many of the coun-
tries that host company productions.
"We choose the junior company
through auditions held once a year
in Israel: Fortis says. "Since we travel
a lot, we meet dancers on tour, and
many times they suggest themselves.
"All the dancers in the senior com-
pany were with the junior company, the
framework for young, excellent dancers.
They can stay for two years and then
either continue or join the senior com-
pany. There's a flow of training:"
Naharin, who will teach two master
classes at the University of Michigan,
is known for Gaga, his method of
developing expression and agility
through movements associated with
dance. He also will speak at a prelude
dinner before the first performance.
Among the artistic centers that have
presented Naharin's works are the
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Nederlands
Dans Theatre, Frankfurt Ballet, Les
Grands Ballets Canadiens and Opera
National de Paris.
"Batsheva was founded as the first
modern dance company in Israel:
explains Fortis, formerly a professional
dancer in Israel and Europe after study-
ing with a Batsheva prima ballerina.
"We were the only company outside
of Graham's own company allowed
to present her work. That helped us
become an international success in a
very short time.
"The heart of our organization is the
commitment to the creative process. It
never seems to stop. We're influenced by
what's around us, and that's more Israeli
than Jewish."
In the two performances being
staged in Ann Arbor, there is only one
segment linked to Judaism. Deca Dance
has an iconic excerpt from a traditional
song that is heard during Passover, but
the music has a rock-like arrangement.
One of Naharin's more creative proj-
ects occurred last summer through
Furo, a collaboration with Tabaimo, a
Japanese animation artist. Costuming

piece.
Furo, Japanese for bathhouse, joins
video clips on three giant screens with
live dance segments and a soundtrack
that mixes the music of East with
West. Performances have received con-
siderable attention in Tel Aviv.
"For viewers — some 20,000 — it's
like visiting an exhibition," Fortis says.
"People can go in and out as they
watch it unfold!"
Naharin, the son of a dance teacher
and a psychologist specializing in psy-
chodrama, trained musically before he
started to dance. He developed Gaga
after suffering a serious back injury
and recently explained the techniques,
also taught to non-dancers, in Chelsea
Now, a New York City publication:
"Gaga became something that had
nothing to do with the performing
arts, just with the maintenance of your
body — healing your body, finding
pleasure and joy in movement."
Fortis says that Batsheva dancers
get opportunities to create their own
work. Through that process, the com-
pany invited Sharon Eyal to become a
senior dancer and, now, the company's
house choreographer.
"When audiences see Batsheva,
they see something very unique:'
Fortis says. "Our dance center was
established in a difficult neighbor-
hood of Tel Aviv, and it changed the
neighborhood, which became a [hub]
for dancers and artists. Our work
has remained very cosmopolitan and
international." ri]

The Batsheva Dance Company
will perform 8 p.m. Saturday,
Feb.14, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb.
15, at the Power Center,121
Fletcher, in Ann Arbor. $18-$42.
(734) 764-2538. A prelude din-
ner, with a talk by Ohad Naharin,
is at 5:30 p.m. Feb.14 on the
fourth floor of the Rackham
Building, 915 E. Washington. $50.
