four questions osh Band chats with Platinum. He's not your average wedding photographer. A peek at JOSHUA BAND's Web site reveals an edgy, high-fashion photo spread, artistic cityscapes and architectural marvels seen through the unique per- spective of his camera lens. But, the 30-year-old, back home in Royal Oak after 10 years in Ann Arbor and the owner of Joshua Band Photography in Royal Oak, also is captivated by the love stories and celebrations that unfold before his eyes. "I get to share in a couple's and a family's most memorable day and know my images will bring back all those memories," he says. After graduating from Berkley High School, Band started out studying computer science "with a splash of art" at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He extended his studies in art, design and filmmaking. He says dramatic studio lighting, post-production and retouching software help create his trademark style. Band can trace his first exposure to photography back to early lessons in art and an interest sparked in the darkroom of his Grandpa Marve. He says his favorite part of the Jewish weddings he photographs is the hora. "You won't see a sullen face in the crowd," says Band. "Everybody is smiling, laughing and sharing in the celebration." To see the world the way he sees it, visit www.joshuabandphotography.com . Here, we ask Josh Band our WHAT BOOK, CD OR OTHER MEDIA ARE YOU LONGING TO SHARE? The last great piece of cinema I saw was Tarsem Singh's The Fall. I would recommend the film on its epic beauty alone as each shot is like a carefully produced photograph with attention to every visible detail. Some complain the plot [about an injured 1920s stuntman's fantastical tales shared with a fellow hospital patient] was a bit thin. I'd say any shortcomings in storytelling were made up in visual aesthetics 100-fold. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEWISH FOOD? Definitely rugelach. But not just any rugelach; it has to be Grandma Dorothy's rugelach. Anytime this treat makes an appearance, I'm immediately taken back to trips visiting my grandparents in Florida. A single bite stirs up many memories: approaching the door to my grandparents' and being overwhelmed by the smell of Jewish home-cooking; palm trees and the warm sand along the Gulf of Mexico; and a candy bowl that seemed, miraculously, to be constantly full. Although my grandmother is no longer alive, my mother and aunts carry on her recipe. IF YOU COULD I-IA\TE BRUNCH WITH ONE BIBLICAL OR HISTORICAL JEWISH FIGURE WHO WOULD IT BE? Steven Spielberg. As one of the most influential people in modern motion picture history, his films make movie watching magical. Growing up in the '80s and '90s, I found Spielberg's films were a large part of my childhood and impressed upon me the power of creativity I love his ability to entertain the masses and the way his directorial vision spans so many different genres. Anything the guy attaches his name to is gold. WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? Although my bread and butter in photography thus far has been weddings, event work and portraiture, my primary creative passion is fashion photography. Capturing fashion gives me an endless palette to cre- ate identity, express myself creatively and tell a story Sharing it is bringing my vision of art, beauty and character to the public eye. With every shoot, I try to bring an element of my fashion-photography work to the table. version of the Four Questions.
