So there isn't a better time to talk about an unusual fund- raising golf outing. The third annual JCC Michigan- Florida Golf Classic will be held March 10 at Westchester Country Club in Boynton Beach, Fla. Snowbirds from Michigan and full-time Florida resi- dents with Michigan ties are invited to play in the event, which benefits the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit's Adele Galper Send-a-Kid-to-Camp Fund. Scholar-Athletes The Michigan High School Athletic Association has released a 54-page list of 2,008 applicants for its Scholar- Athlete Award. Is your Jewish son or daughter on the list? A 69-member committee will select 120 finalists and 32 scholar- ship recipients to be honored at half- time of the Class C state champion- ship boys basketball game March 28 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship. MHSAA member schools submit students' applications. To be eligible for the award, a student must have a cumu- lative 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and a varsity letter in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a post-season tournament. Applicants also must answer a series of short essay questions, write a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in interscholastic athletics, and submit two letters of recommendation. Scholarships totaling $447,000 have been awarded since the 1989-90 school year. Farm Bureau Insurance has underwritten the Scholar-Athlete program since its inception. Fencer Featured Wayne State University fencer Slava Zingerman from Ashkelon, Israel, was the subject of a recent feature story in the Detroit Free Press. Zingerman, 24, has won back-to- back NCAA epee championships. If he wins his third in a row in March at Penn State University, he'll become the first Wayne State epeeist to accomplish the feat. Detroit-based Wayne State has had a men's fencing team since 1932. According to the Free Press, former Wayne State fencer Anna Garina, another Israeli who won NCAA wom- en's titles in epee from 2005 to 2007, helped pave the way for Zingerman to come to Wayne State. Garina told Wayne State fencing coach Jerzy Radz about Zingerman and his fencing accomplishments on the international level. Card Sharks Mitch Mandel won the seventh annual Bloch-Israel and Pisgah- Zeiger B'nai B'rith Texas Hold 'em Tournament held Jan. 25 at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Rounding out the top 10 finishers, in order, were Barry Levine, Justin Fisher, Steve Rusgo, J.J. Reiller, josh Tobias, Mike Cohen, Ivan Fenyvesi, Ryan Cardoni and Jeffrey Kirschner. Sixty-seven players competed. The tournament raises funds for local and national B'nai B'rith programs. Another tournament is planned for late May or early June.
