Equal, NutraSweet, and Canderel). The "emerging research" argument relied on a - study conducted at Pur- due University—lab ani- mals given a steady diet of artificially-sweetened liquids quickly learned that "sweet" equaled "no calories" and began to overeat. Such research may or may not translate to humans. As to the second argument, it does seem logical (and likely) that the more diet soft drinks are con- sumed, the less opportunity for healthier beverage consumption. As recently as 2007, a safety study found that the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe—for a fuller discussion, see Wikipedia (on the web) at tinyurl.com/2pjdzl. — Barbara Beznos, Registered Dietitian Direct Your Questions For Barb And Counseling Inquiries To: ilitOgfatOd Mitfititliii LLCr 32401 Nortinvagtarn Hwy, Farmington flilbg, MI 48334 Plionat (246) 53840-50 E.irialb barbeintagratodnutritionteom Vohs www, intagratedinitritionicom Advortise:1:ent JN 1432210 February 5 • 2009 A3
