Immigration's Impact I wish my engineering profession was as adept in blocking unlicensed prac- titioners as are lawyers and doctors. Journalists and rabbis wouldn't think of dishing out legal advice, but they don't hesitate to pontificate on science. Some wise person once said that a half-truth is worse than a bald face lie. Such are many of the statements made about global warming. For example: Industrial pollution in America is a fraction of what is was before the EPA. Unfortunately, to compete globally, most smoke stack industries, like steel and foundries, have moved to China rather than install equipment that would price them out of business. The result is that pollution in California is increasing due to that which the wind carries across the Pacific. While we worry about one new coal plant in Michigan, China averages one new plant every two months. Rabbi Steve Gutow ("Economy And Environment," Jan. 15, page A27) claims that a 7 percent reduction in carbon emissions is modest. What actually is going on in America is that the average per-capita energy consumption has gone down about 16 percent. All of the increases are due to population growth even though the birth rate of the indigenous popula- tion is near a maintenance level. Therefore, the growth in energy con- sumption is due entirely to immigra- tion! The simplest solution is to reduce immigration by 7 percent. Or you could turn your heat down 15 degrees to match your 2006 consumption level despite the sub-zero weather we have been having. Dennis L.. But before the party gets rolling, let's do a reality check. You're pretty good at killing Jewish women, children and defenseless men, and at using your own women and children as shields. But in a real fight when you dare to come out of your rat holes, you're pretty mediocre. You talk a good game and your propaganda is outstanding. However, that has more to do with the news media and the left wing in the West doing your public rela- tions for you. More importantly, though, how is this going down with the Big Guy Upstairs? Jihadists, you pretend to be pious. You look seriously at the camera and spout pseudo-religious nonsense. But when it comes to values, things that the Big Guy Upstairs counts, you thugs are rock-bottom deficient. You teach your children to hate and to kill people who are different from you. You oppress and abuse women and minorities. You use God's name to justify territorial expan- sion, mass murder, torture, slavery, theft, immorality, dishonesty, brutality, bigotry and discrimination. And the list goes on and on. He can't possibly be happy with you. Jihadists, you may be having fun now, but you got a world of hurt wait- ing for you when your time is done. Douglas Miller Franklin In Every Generation Americans celebrated on Jan. 19, what would have been the 80th birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights fighter slain in the prime of his life ("Showing Solidarity:' Jan. 22, page A25). This year holds greater signifi- cance; the day before was the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as our first African American president. For years, I've taken part in MLK Day activities, most notably at West Bloomfield High School, this year held Jan. 18. The next day, I was invited by a dear African American friend and neighbor to a commemorative inter- faith breakfast in honor of MLK at the Birmingham Community House. We then headed to another commemora- tion at Covenant Baptist Church. At both places, I held hands with African Americans seated beside me as we sang the African American anthem, "We Shall Overcome." Although an Israeli native and Jewish American, I, on that day, felt at one with my African American breth- ren and celebrated the magnificent and blessed life of Dr. King, a great friend of the Jewish people. Every year at Passover, as we read the Haggadah, we declare together: In every generation, a person should see himself as if he himself came out of Egypt. That is actually the reason why we Jews continue to celebrate Passover after so many years. And that is why we celebrate MLK Day. We should not forget the past and what brought us to this day.
