impetus and chance to serve in a

tion Qaddafi's motives. (A day after
the column appeared, the Times
published numerous letters to the
editor condemning the one-state
proposal and the Times for publish-
ing the column.)
A high degree of skepticism and
cynicism seems inappropriate.
After all, this is a novel approach
coming after a century of animos-
ity, hatred, war and revisionist Arab
history.
We will never know Qaddafi's
real motives. Perhaps the easiest
thing to do is call Libya and see if
he really authored the piece.
