r. Brett Kotlus, a cosmetic
and oculofacial plastic sur-
geon in Shelby Township,
spent the last two weeks of September
in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia,
on a humanitarian medical
mission.
He trained a group of
Mongolian surgeons in eyelid
and facial reconstructive
surgery and assisted with
advanced surgical cases,
including facial bone recon-
structions, eyelid reconstruc-
tions, and facial tumor resections.
"The physicians in Mongolia are
highly motivated to advance the
quality of medical care in their coun-
try, but their access to resources is
limited. One-half of Mongolians live
in small huts as part of a nomadic
lifestyle," Kotlus said. "My visit to
Mongolia gave me a rich cultural

experience and it helped me to appre-
ciate the high quality of medicine we
have in the United States!'
Kotlus is dual certified.,
He graduated from Tel Aviv
University and completed
a residency at Long Island
Jewish Medical Center.
This mission was organized
through Health for Humanity,
a group that provides health
development assistance to
communities in need.
Allure Medical Spa of
Shelby Township sponsored the trip,
donating medical materials and
equipment.
Kotlus plans to develop an
Internet-based consultation service
with the surgeons he trained in
Mongolia so they can have access to
year-round assistance with difficult
surgical cases. ❑
