"As much as Kilpatrick's scan-
dal set this region back, I know
Obama's election, the way he won,
and what it means for black self-
determination, are all unbeliev-
able steps forward for this nation:'
Henderson said.
In closing, Henderson urged
approaching race relations without
preconceptions. "If we all did that,"
he said, "the struggle for civil rights
would truly be a memory rather
than a contemporary concern."
Howard Neistein, Federation's
chief administrative officer, had
set the tone for the morning pro-
gram by declaring that at no time
are the teachings of Dr. King more
relevant.
"Choose peace over violence,
hope over despair," Neistein said.
"Let us come together as one peo-
ple and build on the human values
that we share. We may have differ-
ences, but we cannot allow them to
destroy the fabric of our lives."
Dr. King, Neistein added, "gave us
hope that working together, we can
overcome evil and create a saner
and better world."
