But volunteers sorting thousands of dona- tions have already found some interesting items, including old photographs. Sometimes the photos are at the bottom of donated boxes of books; others turn up between the pages. Last year, the Jewish News published several of the photos and was able to return a few "heirlooms" to the owners. Here is a sampling of just some of the photos found so far with this year's donations: • A photo of a woman with a little girl in a stroller; the photo is dated May 4, 1952. • A photo of two young men dressed in suits appears on the front of a post card. The young men are identified as "Bill Blackman and Sam White, Albany, Ala." •A curly-haired young man wearing a Rice Owls T-shirt is featured in a collection of pho- tographs retrieved by Bookstock volunteers. •A photo of a man holding Familiar Face During the Jan. 5 season premiere of ABC's wildly popular romance reality series The Bachelor, there was a familiar face among the 25 women vying for bachelor Jason Mesnick's attention. Renee Simlak, 36, a Southfield native who now lives in Los Angeles, stepped out of the limo wearing a red strapless dress and heels and proudly said, "I grew up in Michigan;' when Mesnick greeted her. "That was kind of like my 'wink' at everyone back home Simlak later revealed. The jewelry designer, a graduate of Southfield-Lathrup High School and Eastern Michigan University, first auditioned four years ago, but got a surprise phone call from the show's producers invit- ing her to be on this season. While she and Mesnick have a few things in common (they're both Jewish), Simlak says there wasn't a real connection. By the end of the two-hour program, she was sent home along with nine other women who didn't get a rose. "I was disappointed because I wanted to continue on the jour- ney," she says. "But it was such an amazing experience:' Among those watching her big TV debut (along with her dog, Rocco, who made a cameo appearance) was her father, Harold Simlak, 80, of Las Vegas. She says she's been flooded with calls and e-mail messages ever since. "I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and took a risk:' she said. "Anything is possible from here." - Robin Schwartz A8 Janu,3ry 15 a 2009 Business Offices Customer Service Assts.: Maya Brodsky, Jan Shain Billing Coordinator: Pamela Turner Collections Analyst: Hazel Bender Creative Services creativeOthejewishnews.com Creative Director: Deborah Schultz Senior Graphic Designer: Lindsay Schwartz Production By VERT'S INC. Books, videos, records, CDs, etc., can be donated for the sale at Hadassah House, 5030 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield; at the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Community Center in Oak Park; or at the Bookstock sorting site behind Bloomfield Plaza, Telegraph and Maple roads. In addition, a drive-through drop-off will be held at Bloomfield Plaza 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1 and March 22. Volunteers recommend that donors look through their contributions to make sure they are not including valuable keepsakes. The sale last year — of books, not photos — raised $100,000 for education and lit- eracy projects. - Alan Hitsky Editor: Robert A.
