middle and high school students from
throughout Metro Detroit. They asked:
What would you like in a teen center?
Then they wrote everything down and
made list after list, considered their
finances, and did a lot of planning.
The result, Sachse says, is a mix
of new world and old. There's Rock
Band, a video game that allows players
to perform their favorite tunes, plus
pinball, Wii games, Xbox, DDR, pool
tables, a kosher snack bar, flat-screen
televisions, air hockey, a movie theater,
PlayStation 3 and plenty of places to
just sit and talk.
"What makes the Teen Center spe-
cial is that it has everything teens love
to do:' says Sachse, an Aerosmith fan
who favors Rock Band.
Goutkovich is a movie devotee
— "Billy Madison" and "Momento" are
favorites — who loves the theater.
"This place [the Teen Center] is
actually where any teen would want to

go:' he says. Whether wandering in to
the smell of hot popcorn after school
or stopping in for a quick game on
a break, students from the Academy
already are in love with the facility,
Goutkovich says.
Sachse also likes the fact that Jewish
teens from any neighborhood, from
any school, from any congregation,
have a place to be together. The Teen
Center, she says, "connects everyone'
And "you'll never get bored:' she adds.
"The possibilities are endless."
The Teen Center is filled with color:
robin-egg-blue walls and bright-
purple lamps, a blue tile floor. There
are cubbies where students can drop
off backpacks and jackets and plenty
of quiet study areas.
Not only do Goutkovitch and Sachse
love the Teen Center for what it is, they
look forward to all the possibilities it
offers.
For Goutkovitch, it means that a
group of friends can pop in any time
and just watch a movie and visit.
Sachse envisions Karaoke nights and
Wii tournaments.
