Elizabeth Applebaum Special to the Jewish News S ometimes even the most intelligent, soft-spoken and refined young woman needs to find her inner Keith Moon and pound the drums to "Won't Get Fooled Again." Maybe after performing she'll need to relax with a good, old-fashioned game of pinball with a dizzy silver globe that spins and dives and jumps amid vivid lights. Ding! Clang! Ting! Then it's off for a fresh, hot soft pretzel and a movie, followed by a quiet hour of study. And it's all in one place: The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit's Beverly Prentis Wagner Teen Center will hold its grand opening from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. In addition to the facility's already diverse collection of games and activities, as colorful as a bubble-gum machine, the evening will include entertainment by Star Trax and a chance to play Boogie Heads, which creates a DVD of a person singing — his or her real head atop a funky, dancing cartoon body. (Adults: Do not consider for even a single moment try- ing this if your teens are present.) "I am so excited for the grand open- ing of the Teen Center:' says Lindsey Fox, coordinator of Center Day Camps and Teen Services. "This is a wonder- ful opportunity for the teens in our community to have a place to call their own." Before it became the Teen Center, the area housed the former Holocaust Memorial Center. The space underwent extensive renovations designed and overseen, top to bottom, by the teens themselves. Erica Sachse, a student at Berkley High School, and Ben Goutkovitch, who attends the Frankel Jewish Academy, are co-chairmen of the Teen Center student board.
