Party T2T Torah: Parshat Shemot Pages You've Been Spotted! Our Party Page ° photographers are looking for the best parties! Watch for us! Jan. 17, 2009 — by Carly Cykiert what's in a name? For Jews, a name honors a beloved relative. The literal translation of the word Shemot is names. Moses's Egyptian mother finds him on the Nile River. She names him Moshe, or Moses, which means drawn out of the water. In the Jewish religion, a name is not just a name; it holds a promise of the child's future. A child is named after a relative who has passed away or a relative that holds a piece of the parent's heart. When a mother and father hold their baby for the first time, they look in the baby's eyes and hope the name they gave their child will honor the relative and impact some- one just like the relative has impacted them. In today's world, a name is something that shows your creativity, such as naming your child after a fruit, your favorite character in a children's book or a city. Although these things may have significance to the parents, it's not the same as naming your child after someone who left a mark in your life. Most Jewish people are given two names, a Hebrew name and an English name. Orthodox Jews generally believe that your Hebrew name is your real name and your English name is a name used only in America. You're given your Hebrew name at a baby naming or bris, ceremonies where a baby is wel- comed into the Jewish religion. Some names are the exact same names as the relative they are named after, and some names are just a letter or just something to remind them of the relative. Every parent's hopes and dreams are that their child becomes a well- Josh, Josh, Conor, Wayne, Garrison, Noah, Griffin, Alec and Evan rounded and good person. They typically name their child after someone at Ashley's "A Matter of Taste." who impacted their life greatly, and they want their child to be just like that person. A name can mean everything.
