Operation Cast Lead

Come for the Lifestyle.

A Secure Effort from page A19

ambiguous enough for the politicians
to work with and for Hamas to be con-
cerned about.
Outlining IDF policy, he shared
how humanitarian efforts were inte-
grated into each stage or phase of the
operation. But he understands that
to effectively fight Hamas, civilians
will be caught in the crossfire. Hamas'
placement of weapons storage and
launch facilities inn mosques, hospi-
tals, universities and homes in highly
populated areas makes such undesir-
able outcomes inevitable.
"Palestinians are suffering a terrible
disaster and tragedy, but the only ones
they should blame is their leadership,
not us," T said. "We do not hit civilian
targets on purpose, but if [Hamas]
fights from behind civilians, [the civil-
ians] might be hurt. This is very sad.
We don't hate our enemy."

Brighter Picture

T. saw other important improvements

from 2006.
"Political leadership coordinates
and communicates very well;' he said,
addressing a major criticism of the
Lebanon experience.
He also said restricting news media
access to Gaza was a lesson learned.
"You could see on TV every movement
of every battalion. The lesson was crit-
ical for us. We learned we don't need

the media walking around between
our legs."
He said there is plenty of accurate
information being provided by Israel,
including videos on YouTube.
"I'm continually amazed at the bal-
ance of compassion and strength of
Israeli soldiers, and it makes me proud
every day to be a Jew," said Mark Soltz
of Commerce Township.
Ricky Behar of Farmington Hills
was bothered by media depictions of
Israeli actions. "I'm concerned with
the significant pro-Palestinian slant
evident in both the media and the
court of public opinion:' he said. "I
even hear from some of my fellow
Jews that there is a massacre going
on in Gaza. I want a balanced media
because a balanced media will serve to
substantiate what Israel is saying."
David Mendelsohn of West
Bloomfield expressed concerns about
media coverage, but for a different
reason. "I'm fed up with the secular
media because of all the pop news
they cover;' he said. "I want to hear
more about the Middle East and what
is going on in Israel."
Mendelsohn believes there is a lot of
support for Israel in the general popu-
lation. "Where I'm working, no one
really knows I'm Jewish or Israeli, but
they seem to be fed up with the Arabs,"
Mendelsohn said.

During this time of heightened concern for fellow Jews in Israel, health-
care providers can help. American Physician Fellowships maintain a list
of providers here in the U.S. that are willing and able to come to Israel
and staff clinics and hospitals in a time of need.
The program is endorsed by the Israel Ministry of Health and the IDF
Medical Corps. If there is a call-up, Israel will pay for the flight as well as
room and board. There is no obligation to go if one cannot make it.

Answering Israel's Critics

The Charge
Arab spokesmen and "man on the street" interviews during Israel's recent
defensive actions in Gaza overwhelmingly smear Israel as an aggressor, a war
criminal and as inhumane.

The Answer
Those who criticize Israel are exposed by their one-sidedness, never calling
for the boycott or prosecution of Hamas or Hezbollah terrorists. And they are
well aware of the quantity of aid entering Gaza and the patients who enter
Israel for medical treatment.
