CARS AND KIDS
The North American International Auto Show, in its 21st year, starts out
with a glam preview party, including local and visiting celebrities. Besides see-
ing the latest cars, attendees will be raising funds for children's charities. The
black-tie gala takes place 6-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Detroit's Cobo Center,
where the public can view the latest vehicle designs starting Saturday, Jan. 17,
and continuing through Sunday, Jan. 25. The gala has brought in some $77
million for local causes, and the organizations benefiting from this year's event
include Barat Child and Family Services, Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern
Michigan, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Detroit, the Children's Center, Judson
Center, Children's Services of Northeastern Guidance Center Assistance
League, the Detroit Institute for Children, Think Detroit PAL, Easter Seals–
Michigan, March of Dimes, Children's Hospital of Michigan and the DADA
Charitable Foundation Fund, a project of the Community Foundation of

The Coalition On Temporary Shelter (COTS) serves nutritious foods to the
homeless with the help of donors, and the upcoming months could bring
financial challenges more daunting than in recent years. To raise funds to sup-
port COTS through the tough times, the organization has enlisted the talents
of local chefs for its Soup City 2009, a food-tasting, fundraising event that
features all kinds of delicious broths served at popular restaurants and supple-
mented with fancy breads and other treats. The benefit runs 5:30-10 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 19, at the Gem and Century theaters, 333 Madison, in Detroit,
where there also will be entertainment and a raffle. Blaine Fowler, morning
DJ on WDVD (96.3 FM), will introduce newscaster Devin Scillian and his
Arizona Son band, the Keith Malinowski Jazz Trio, magician Ron Aldrich and
