nswer: Dear Ruby, Ac-
cording to the Mayo
Clinic, perimenopause
marks the interval when your
body begins to transition into
menopause. It can last from 2-8
years plus the year after your last
period. Some woman notice these
changes as early as their mid-30s.

During perimenopause, es-
trogen levels can fluctuate,
your periods can lengthen/
,
`ve/ . , shorten, and your body
may exhibit changes
that present themselves

as menopause, (even
though menstruation is
still occurring). Typical
symptoms are: men-
strual irregularity, hot
flashes, night sweats, er-
ratic sleep, mood changes,
vaginal and bladder issues,
loss of bone mass, and others.

Because your risk of osteoporosis
and heart disease increase during
this time, a healthy diet is more
important than ever. A low-fat,
high-fiber diet rich in fruits, veg-
etables, whole grains, omega-3s,
calcium and vitamin D is strongly
recommended. Avoid tobacco, al-
cohol, and caffeine. Consult with
your physician and dietitian.
