SEYMOUR "SY" TECHNER, 79, of Toronto, formerly of Detroit, died Dec. 23, 2008. Early the 1960s, he was instrumental in building the first modern automatic carwashes in prime locations in Detroit and Windsor. Based on their overwhelming suc- cess, in 1965 he was asked to become exclusive Canadian distributor for Sherman Equipment, the leading North American automatic carwash equipment manufacturer. In 1970, Sherman Equipment built a manufacturing plant in Toronto in order to support Mr. Techner's sales and produce all of the carwash systems for the growing Canadian market. By 1972, he had purchased the manufacturing rights and the new Canadian factory from Sherman Equipment. Over the next several years, he changed the focus of the company to designing and manufac- turing larger vehicle wash systems for bus and truck fleets and expanded to sell throughout North America to the municipal Transportation Authorities.
