Dear
Bar , wor-
ried about the
negative effects
of aging. Any
suggestions on
_
how to "defeat" Father Time (or is
it Mother Nature?). Annette.
•
Sirens of Chrome All
Here's a basic list (no magic
elixirs—just sound strategies):
• Maintain a healthy body
weight—studies have
shown that eating less may
,s/
you to live longer;
• Eat less refined carbo-
hydrates/sugars, less
.
processed meats, and
eat more complex car-
bohydrates (e.g., raw
fruits and vegetables);
• Eliminate or reduce
alcohol, caffeine, and to-
bacco from your lifestyle;
• Eat foods high in omega-3s (e.g.,
fish, walnuts, and flaxseed);
• Exercise regularly and age-
appropriately;
• Reduce stress whenever/wher-
ever possible and increase your
social connections.
Before undertaking any sig-
nificant lifestyle changes, consult
your physician and/or dietitian.

A
nswer: Dear Annette,
Unfortunately, there's no
fooling/defeating either
Father Time or Mother Nature, at
least not forever; however, there
are some things that can be done
in terms of nutrition and lifestyle
behaviors to delay, or at the very
least, mitigate against the damag-
ing effects of aging.
