"I promise that if we ever buy a Torah of our own, we will pass this one on to another congregation in need." "It feels so good to give a Torah to a congregation in Germany where Hitler tried to destroy the Jewish people, and now we are trying to help build a con- gregation," Peresman said. "We feel like we should try to convince other con- gregations to donate a Torah they don't need to a congregation in need." "The giving of the Torah to Ohel HaChidusch is truly an act of corn- passionate understanding and love," Yerman said. "It has truly been a bless- ing to be with a wonderful, inspired and deeply committed group of people." Emma Berkel and Ava Randa, both 11, took each other's pictures in front of the open ark that displayed the Blumenstein Family Torah and the other CST Torahs. They each partici- pated in "Two on a Quill." "This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance knowing you are going to be part of history;' Ava said. "And it's so cool to help someone else get a Torah," Emma said. '`And we got a new Torah." The Levys donated funds for the ner tamid in memory of his sister, Barbara Paley, who was an active congregant until her death from cancer 25 years ago. "We thought the ner tamid would best represent the vibrant, glowing spirit that Barbara beamed throughout her life," Cary said. "I'm so proud," said Littman. "I'm an octogenarian and I'm so happy to be here to participate in this wonderful dedication. I'm so glad the reader's table will be used at every service and that I could help make that possible." Shir Tikvah is completing its $613,000 Torah Alive! Campaign this December. The campaign serves two purposes, according to Michael Silverstein, committee co-chair and CST past president. "It solidifies the congregation's financial future and fulfills the 613th and final commandment — to write a Torah scroll for oneself, which we completed with assis- tance from Neil Yet-Man and our Torah soferet [scribe] Jen Taylor Friedman of New York." Sider created an illusion of the waters of the Sea of Reeds at the bottom of the Ark's doors. "Each time the doors of the Ark are opened and our precious Torah is retrieved or placed back inside,' the Red Sea will be split or joined," she said. She included additional Jewish symbolism that represents CST. CST's bimah of today is a far cry from the bimah of 25 years ago, according to the shul's co- founder Pam Spitzer and her hus- band, Rich. The congregation, first known as Troy Jewish Congregation, met in three different churches in Troy. "We had to have a portable Ark that we could wheel in and out when we were done with servic- es," the Troy couple explained. Initially, congregants brought in religious symbols to respect- fully cover the Christian symbols. Members Lou Sheer (now deceased) and Lee Zendel of Rochester Hills made the CST's first Ark. Ten years ago, the shul needed a larger Ark. Former member Paul Michelin designed and crafted the second Ark, which now has a home at the Shul in Cleveland. "We are so very grateful for the generous congregants whose donations allowed us to embark on this journey of creating sacred objects with a distinct Shir Tikvah identity," Choinard said.
