Rob Stern of Oak Park and Ezra Drissman of Farmington Hills with gun club
president Ron Miller of West Bloomfield

Interest In Shooting
Stuart Weiss, an environmental con-
sultant in West Bloomfield and a
member with Miller at Bais Chabad,
said his father is an National Rifle
Association life member and that both
his father and grandfather were mili-
tary men.
Weiss' grandfather was highly deco-
rated in World War I.
Weiss is married with two grown
children. His daughter, who made ali-
yah, hoped to join the Israeli army. She
went with her father to the range here
for training, but a broken arm pre-
vented her from serving in Israel. For
his son's 21st birthday present, Weiss
gave him an Israeli pistol.
"I'm mystified by most Jewish
Americans' attitude towards guns,"
Weiss said.
"I don't know where this aver-
sion comes from. Recently, in shul, I
announced a club function and this
guy flipped out, challenging my right
to announce this in shul. American
Jews are so proud of Israel's ability
to defend itself and Jews worldwide,
yet there's a disconnect between that
and the views of gun ownership for
American Jews."
Weiss, like several other members,
feels that America "can't defend you
from criminals. Police can investigate
after the fact and prosecute. When
seconds count, the police are minutes
away. Knowing that and my obligation
to defend myself, it's a natural conclu-
sion that I should have the skills and
tools to do so."
Rob Stern, 24, of Oak Park also
was at Island Lake. He learned basic
firearms training the summer of 2002
during a two-month program with the
IDF. The program is designed to pro-
vide an authentic Israeli army experi-
ence. After the program, he returned
to his studies at the University of

Michigan. One of the initial draws of
the club for him was that "it sounded
like an interesting experience and it
sounded fun:'
Fun is precisely Rabbi Tolwin's
favorite part of the club. "It's fun to
shoot:' he said. "I like the challenge. I
think it's like golf — getting a bull's
eye or as close as I can gee'

Family Affair
John Poris was shooting clay pigeons
with the club at Island Lake. His sons,
Aaron, 19, and Ethan, 15, came along.
In 1977, at U-M, Poris enrolled in a rifle
and pistol class at the ROTC (Reserve
Officers Training Corps) building "and
loved it immediately:'After gradua-
tion, he made aliyah to Kibbutz Grosit
near Eilat and was drafted into the
IDF about a year and a half later. He
returned to the U.S. in 1981.
At the shooting range, Aaron Poris,
a Wayne State University art student,
was trying to read a philosophy book
but kept getting interrupted.
"I don't see myself owning a gun
later in life he said, "I come with my
dad because I don't see him all that
often, and I'm all for this. I agree 100
percent with people being able to own
guns as long as they treat the weapon
with respect and understand its safety
rules.
"I live in a pretty safe area and
don't need to own a gun. However, if
I'm walking around in public, I can
be sure that there could very well be
someone with a concealed weapon
who would protect me because people
who use guns for violent crimes don't
usually have them legally."
His brother, Ethan, added, "We're
bonding over guns and clay pigeons;
we're not hurting anyone." El
