Tapper's Diamonds &
Fine Jewelry's coat
drive.
E
very year for the last 10
years, Judy Shapiro has tried
to make sure every student
at the school where she teaches who
needs a coat receives one.
Three years ago, she contacted Steve
Tapper from Tapper's Diamonds &
Fine Jewelry in West Bloomfield and
Novi about the store's yearly coat drive.
He was extremely generous and pro-
vided 75 students with either slightly
used or brand new coats. People also
donated gloves, hats and scarves.
"I was so pleased when Steve Tapper
contacted me again about adopting my
school, Samuel B. Dixon, in Detroit,"
Shapiro said.
"The students and their families are
very appreciative.
"There are students who walk half
a mile, and it is very hard to come to
school without proper attire," she said.
"The staff at Samuel B. Dixon wants to
thank Tapper's and all the people who
have so generously donated to this
wonderful cause."
This year, Tapper's delivered more
than 2,000 coats locally ❑
Shoah Foundation
Shapiro joins board of councilors.
F
filmmaker Steven Spielberg
and University of Southern
California President Steven B.
Sample have named Bloomfield Hills
real estate developer Mickey Shapiro
to the Shoah Foundation Institute
board of councilors.
Established by
Spielberg in 1994, the
Shoah Foundation
documents the expe-
riences of survivors
and other witnesses
of the Holocaust.
To date, more than
50,000 testimonies,
Mickey
given
in 32 languages
Shapiro
by people living in 56
countries, have been
videotaped.
"I'm deeply honored to join the
Shoah Foundation Institute board of
councilors," said Shapiro. "I believe
strongly that, without education,
history will repeat itself. The Shoah
Foundation is dedicated to overcom-
ing past prejudice and bigotry through
education to make this a better world
for future generations."
Shapiro, the son of Holocaust
survivors, was born in a displaced
persons camp. The family arrived in
the United States in 1949, and moved
to Metro Detroit, where he has lived
ever since. Shapiro recently served as
a presidential appointee to the gov-
erning council of the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum and is the first
person to have served on the board
for the Shoah Foundation and the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Shapiro is a principal of Lautrec
Limited, a real estate management
company in Farmington Hills.
