Feldman, 70, retired at the end of November after about 25 years working as the daytime shomer (reli- gious watchman praying over the deceased) at the Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield. That job was a match made in heaven for Feldman, an Orthodox Jew who valued the oppor- tunity to serve the community in this role. Visitors to the chapel appreciated his warm smile, caring manner and decorum. Feldman has been served by JARC in Farmington Hills since 1979. He lives in JARC's Harry and Sarah Laker Home in West Bloomfield with five other men, assisted by professional staff. JARC is dedicated to enabling people with disabilities to live full, dignified lives in the community and to providing support and advocacy for their families. Carrie Thomason, Laker Home assistant manager, said, "Jacob is thoughtful of others and their feel- ings. He is very debonair, outgoing and friendly, a happy person. He loved working and going out into the com- munity. Being Jewish is very impor- tant to him. He attends synagogue weekly and enjoys teaching things to the non-Jewish staff." David Techner of the Ira Kaufman Chapel said, "You couldn't have found a more perfect job for Jacob. He couldn't wait to come to work each day. He was so proud of what he did, was the perfect employee and always a pleasure. He also was a wonderful symbol of our mission and JARC's." Techner first met Feldman while serving on the JARC board. He attend- ed a JARC Shabbat dinner where Feldman officiated over the Jewish rituals. As a youngster, Feldman was taught prayers and Yiddish by his parents, with his Jewish education reinforced by his years at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in Southfield. Feldman so impressed Techner that, when a vacancy occurred at the Kaufman Chapel for a shomer, he was invited to interview for the job. •
