hen it comes to picking
out proper flooring, good
luck. You're looking at a
dazzling array of materials and styles
and trends, virtually all of which are
eco-friendly. Laminates, hard woods,
bamboo, vinyl, tile and the good old
standbys — carpets and area rugs
— are all on the menu.
"Just choose what's appropriate for
you, your home and your lifestyle,"
says Tovah Fineberg, a Royal Oak
interior designer currently in New
York City. She is studying for a mas-
ter's degree in design management at
the Pratt School of Art and Design.
The owner of a local wholesale/
retail flooring store, who asked for
anonymity, says, "The hot trend in
carpeting is patterns ... it makes a
real decorating statement. Hardwood
floors are big. They enhance the
home and can be spruced up with ori-
ental rugs."
Nylon, polyester and wool remain
popular materials for carpet, the
owner says. And carpeting remains
a good value with the price per yard
(nine square feet), ranging from $10 to
$100 per square foot.
"Kitchen flooring is strange," he
says. "People put down ceramic and
can't walk on it ... it is very hard.
Vinyl is real good ... there are no
drawbacks but people don't like the
idea of it. It lasts a long time, looks
good, is easy to take care of and
cheaper than a laminated floor. It
comes in all kinds of colors and styles
and can last up to 30 years."
A sheet of vinyl costs from $1 to $4
per square foot, but vinyl requires a
sub floor and the cost of installation
can be expensive, he adds.
One flooring the owner didn't like
was the once hot-selling Pergo, man-
made wood. "We have no confidence
in the product. It is not permanently
installed and it allows water to get
underneath the flooring, and that
causes longevity issues!'
That's news to Jennifer Lopatin who
has had Pergo flooring in her West
Bloomfield home for nine years.

The only time Lopatin experienced
water problems resulted when the
water line to her refrigerator broke,
creating a mini flood. The flooring
lived to see another day.
"There are faint scratches on the
flooring now but it is maintenance
free," Lopatin says. "It is a laminate
and a lot of people are surprised when
I tell them it is not wood."
Lopatin was so happy with Pergo
that she bought it for her foyer.
Flooringnow.com, an online floor-
ing trends and news blog, says carpets
remain the most practical and top-
selling home flooring, bringing color
and warmth into every room with its
endless patterns, colors and textures.
Area rugs are the latest trend in
home decorating and complement
wood floors. They provide a variety
of splashes of color, as well as sound-
proofing hardwood floors. Area rugs
are easy to pick up and move, easily
cleaned and cost nothing to install,
flooringnow says.
Cork is gaining in consumer popu-
larity. It is a big eco-friendly material,
both renewable and anti-microbial.
