Rabbi Conrad, Pastor Kaufman and Cantorial Soloist Frank T he Grosse Pointe Jewish Council and Grosse Pointe Congregational Church held a joint Thanksgiving service at the church, believed to be the first joint Jewish-Christian service in the Grosse Pointes. The Nov. 23 service was led by Pastor M. Jacob Kaufman, Rabbi Ernst J. Conrad and Cantorial Soloist Bryant Frank. Symbols and prayers of both tra- ditions were blended into the service. Members of both congregations heard Rabbi Conrad speak of his gratitude to the United States for welcoming him as a German refugee in 1938 and the joy he felt as his ship passed the Statue of Liberty entering New York Harbor. Pastor Kaufman spoke on the Now on View: importance of focusing on what unites us rather than what separates us and on our shared worship of our one God. He related to the congregation how pleased he was when he mentioned that the United Church of Christ was updating their prayers to include the biblical matriarchs and Rabbi Conrad told him that Reform Judaism had made the same changes. Pastor Kaufman also led in the reading of Rabbi Abraham Heschel's "No Religion Is An Island!' The evening ended with a joint kiddush sponsored by both congre- gations. At the kiddush, members of both congregations spoke of how much they had enjoyed the service and their hope that this would become an annual event.
