large contribution from D.
Dan Kahn of Bloomfield
Hills will be used to build
the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Mechanical
Engineering Building at the Technion-
Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa.
The significant gift (the exact
amount was not made public) was
made through the New York-based
American Technion Society.
The engineering building and its
facilities will help advance the already
world-class research conducted at the
university, and allow for collaboration
and product development with other
world-class institutions — including
the University of Michigan, to which
Kahn has strong ties.
Kahn's decades-long commitment to
Israel and the Technion began in the
1960s, when he was building his inter-
national Production Tool Supply Co. He
was struck by the number of Technion
alumni who were doing business in
Israel.
"I realized in the 1960s that the
future of Israel's industry would come
from Technion-trained engineers, and
have watched with great interest in the
years since as an astounding number
of Technion-developed products have
been exported from Israel:' Kahn said.
"It is my belief that without Technion,
Israel would not be enjoying its current
worldwide economic success?'
Technion President Yitzhak
Apeloig said the Technion's Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering has a direct
bearing on the ability of Israel's high-
tech and security industries to thrive
in the increasingly competitive global
marketplace.
Mechanical Engineering Faculty
Dean Michael Shapiro said, "The new
building will feature modern research
and teaching facilities that will ensure
we remain on the cutting edge of
energy systems, robotics, mechatronics,
bio-mechanics, nanotechnology and
other advanced branches of mechanical
engineering?'
Past gifts from Kahn to the Technion
have funded the Medical Robotics
Lab in the Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering (where Technion Professor
Moshe Shoham created the FDA-
approved Spine Assist robot for flaw-
less spinal surgery) and the security
shield that surrounds and protects the
university. Kahn was one of the original
contributors to the first aeronautical
engineering building at the Technion.
"This extraordinary gift from such
an accomplished man underscores the
importance of the Technion to advanc-
ing the quality of life for Israelis and
for the world," said ATS Detroit Chapter
President Scott Leemaster.
"I believe in funding things that
have the great potential to help people
around the world:' said Kahn. "The
Technion has produced, and continues
to produce, well-trained and highly
motivated engineers with the quickness
of youth and the sense of urgency nec-
essary to make a difference for Israel
and the world. Without the Technion's
developments and contributions to
high-tech and industry, Israel would
not be able to achieve the scale of suc-
cess it has attained?'
Kahn is a member of the Technion
International Board of Governors, the
New York-based ATS Board of Directors
and past president of the ATS Detroit
Chapter. He is a Technion Guardian, a
designation reserved for ATS support-
ers who have reached the highest level
of commitment. In 2006, the Technion
awarded him an honorary fellowship.
