Dear

Bar , i e

people right
now I'm under
a lot of stress
and don't foresee it abating any
time soon. From a health and
nutrition standpoint, what should
I be concerned about and what,
if anything, can I do about it?
Thanks, Jenny.
A
nswer (Part 1 of 2): Dear
Jenny, Stress, in one form
or another, is part of our
everyday lives. It's when stress
becomes chronic that it can, and
likely will, negatively affect our
body and mind.
One of the insidious things about
chronic stress is that its symptoms
often mimic other health prob-
lems, e.g., headache, stom-
ach upset, sleep/fatigue
issues, irritability, sadness,
lack of concentration, so-
cial withdrawal, appetite
change, over-eating, ex-

ing, and drug abuse,

If not successfully man-
aged, chronic stress can
result in long-term health effects
such as lowered immune resis-
tance to serious illness, increased
risk of heart disease and cancer,
chronic skin problems, diabetes,
asthma, stomach ulcers, etc.
Next Time: Healthy nutrition and
lifestyle can make a difference.
