Citrin, who met Taubman at a song
leaders conference in Wisconsin, thinks
of this folk rendition in terms of her
own upbringing.
"Both sides of my family have
Holocaust survivors:' explains the
Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter.
"When I hear the words,'Don't let the
light go out; I think about my Jewish
identity being partly based on people
I never met because the light went out
for them."
Citrin, whose family members enjoy
singing and playing instruments at par-
ties and at home, started out studying
piano. She turned to guitar after finding
one in her basement while looking for a
runaway hamster.
"I knew that music was something
I couldn't get away from as a college
student writing songs instead of pay-
ing attention in biology and math: says
the entertainer, who recorded a short
album during a study trip to Australia,
where she entertained at pubs. "I just
kept going with music as a connection
to other people'
After graduating as a political science
major from Rutgers University in New
Jersey, Citrin signed with a booking
agency and grew her performance career.
She did vocals for a trance song, "Turn It
On," that topped the charts in Europe.

Moll, 45, raised Catholic and a founder
of the Shoah Foundation, met Jonas at
a foundation function and mentioned
Hertwig.
"Helen said to me, `I have no interest in
speaking to her. Just looking at her pic-
ture reminds me Amon.' But at the end of
the day, she came over, took my arm and
said,'I want to talk to you later:"
At Jonas' request, Hertwig wrote her
another letter, and the two arranged the
meeting at the center of Inheritance. It
took place at Plaszow in August 2004. ❑

"She was very nice and spoke very
good English:' Moll said. Their conver-
sation was pleasant enough, until she
stunned him with five simple words: "I
am not my father."
"I got chills," Moll recalls. "I said, 'Of
course not. Do you find people judge
you based on who your father is?' She
laughed and said,'Of course.'"
Hertwig, born in 1945, hadn't known
her father; she was told that he died an
honorable death in the war. But dur-
ing an argument, her mother told her,
"You are just like your father, and you'll
die like him." It wasn't until her mater-
nal grandmother explained what that
meant that Hertwig discovered her past.
"I'd never thought about the
Holocaust from the perspective of the
perpetrators and their families:' said
Moll. "[The Nazis] made decisions that
had ramifications for their children and
grandchildren." It was, he felt, a compel-
ling subject for a film.
Then serendipity made it even bet-
ter. For several years, Hertwig had been
trying to arrange a meeting with Jonas,
but the survivor refused. Coincidentally,

ing New York, explaining what it's like
to be an artist.
"I think of Rosh Hashanah as similar
to Chanukah in terms of family gather-
ings and special foods, although Rosh
Hashanah is more introspective," says
Citrin, who soon will release a record-
ing with original songs about the eter-
nal struggle between head and heart.
"Music is a wonderful way to pass
down values, and I'm hoping families
will gather around the TV for Lights
and then talk about the songs they've
heard." ❑
