Hadassah's Reach

Biennial Boost

Thank you so much for highlight-
ing the exciting collaboration of the
Hadassah Medical Center and the
Jerusalem AIDS project, Operation
Abraham, whereby male circumci-
sion is combating the AIDS pandemic
("Aiding Africa," Nov. 20, page A32).
Because Hadassah physicians place a
premium on sharing their expertise by
training their counterparts in Africa,
the positive impact of such a program
will multiply exponentially.
An additional example of such out-
reach is a Pediatric AIDS program in
Ethiopia that treats orphans with anti-
retroviral therapy and other medical
and social services that has resulted
in a rapid decline in the orphanage's
previously high mortality rate. This is
a paradigm that will also be replicated
in other communities.
These programs reflect Hadassah's
dedication to international bridge
building through medicine. Indeed,
Hadassah physicians are often the first
foreign personnel on the ground dur-
ing worldwide disasters, such as the
2004 tsumani. We can all take proud in
such efforts, which are the personifica-
tion of a Judaic core value: tikkun olam
(repair of the world).

Regarding your article "Hosted By
Our Own" (Nov. 6, page A35): Thank
you so much for giving us such good
publicity for the Women's League for
Conservative Judaism's biennial con-
vention held last month in Dearborn.
I have promised to send a copy to the
national leadership as they are anxious
to see how well we were supported by
our local Jewish newspaper.

Corrections

• In "Back In Time" (Nov. 27, page
A20), the director of the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan should
have been identified as Aimee Ergas.

• The cover story on the Janice
Charach Gallery (Nov. 27, page B11)
did not include the full name of the
late artist Janice Charach Epstein.

Conventional Support
Thanks for the great article "Hosted By
Our Own" (Nov. 6, page A35). Senior
Writer Shelli Liebman Dorfman did a
fantastic job writing, as always, and we
all appreciate the effort that you put
into making this Women's League for
Conservative Judaism biennial con-
vention, held last month in Dearborn,
sound as exciting as it was.
It was an inspiring and exciting
experience to have convention right
here and we were delighted to be the
host community.
