hey rose to fame in the 1960s as one of Motown's first acts. Now the Contours
are considered one of the top 500 Rhythm & Blues acts of all time. The mod-
em-day version of the legendary group took the stage Nov. 6 at Knollwood
Country Club in West Bloomfield during the Anti-Defamation
League Michigan Region's fall fundraiser, "A Single Night of
Music." They entertained a crowd of about 230 people, perform-
ing songs, including the 1962 smash hit "Do You Love Me."
"The Contours were really high energy;' said ADL Michigan
Regional Director Betsy Kellman of Huntington Woods. "They
had people up and dancing in the aisles."
Award-winning singer, song writer and author Elaine Serling
of Orchard Lake warmed up the crowd, performing Broadway
show tunes. Fox 2 news anchor Charles Pugh served as master
of ceremonies. The evening also included cocktails, a strolling
dinner and an update on some of the serious issues facing the

ADL, which fights anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry.
"With the election of Barack Obama, I think it's a great time for our country," said
Kellman. "But, I think it's also going to be a tough time because he's going to be a target
of racists in the United States."
In October, two skinhead neo-Nazis were arrested in a plot to assassinate Obama and
kill 102 others. Kellman says the officers involved in foiling the ill-conceived plan trained
with the ADL, including attending terrorist and extremist training sessions in Israel. She
says more people are joining white supremacist groups in the wake of the election.
"We just want to make sure this country moves forward in a positive direction:'
Kellman said. "When the economy is bad, we know we have a huge uptick in discrimina-
tion complaints. We need people's support now more than ever."
Spotted in the ADL fall fundraiser crowd were: Event chair Michael Serling of
Orchard Lake; Margie, Donald and Leena Epstein of Bloomfield Hills; Elaine
Sherman and Lilly and Alex Stotland, all of Birmingham; Sally Soberman of West
Bloomfield; and Vicky and David Buckfire of Farmington Hills. 'El
