Expansive Judaism
There's not just one way to be Jewish,
Hirschfield stressed: "There are as
many ways to be Jewish as there are
people who want to be."
Being Jewish is expressed by
embracing Jewish thought and prac-
tice. "The goal of doing this is not to
become like your teacher:' Hirschfield
says. "It's to be yourself"
The popular lecturer, blogger and
radio show host talked about shatter-
ing false dichotomies that keep us from
appreciating each other and maybe
even ourselves. "When this shatter-
ing happens, we're happier, the people
around us are better served and the
world gets a touch healthier," he says.
Who was I to argue?
I was intrigued to hear that over the
last 20 years, CLAL learning programs
have served a network of 600 U.S. and
Israeli rabbis from varied religious
backgrounds.
New Heights
We also talked about CLAL's mission;
the answer I got was a wonderful take
on religious pluralism. CLAL believes
there is a place in Jewish life for every
person who seeks one, regardless of
dogma, doctrine or belief. Further, it
believes that Jewish ideals and laws
have something to contribute to the
human race through the insights they
yield.
Throughout history, Torah and
other sacred Jewish texts have pro-
vided intellectual direction worthy of
the public's scrutiny. The time is again
ripe for Jewish wisdom to secure a
spot in the American public square.
Rabbi Hirschfield, ever the dreamer,
put it this way: "We are blessed with
the wisdom to actually be part of a
global conversation about how to cre-
ate a better world."
Whether that conversation actually
inspires reconciliation, harmony and
growth depends on the sweep of par-
ticipation. El
