Special Service

B'nai Moshe holds program for local veterans.

C

ongregation B'nai Moshe
Men's Club honored and
remembered the veterans of
in the Jewish community Nov. 9 during
a special service followed by brunch
and a veteran-themed program.
Veterans and widows of veterans
were the special guests of honor at the
event. Rabbi Elliot Pachter welcomed
all to the service; Sid Kraizman, presi-
dent of the Men's Club, introduced the
brunch program that began with the
singing of the national anthems of the
United States, Israel and Canada.
After brunch, Art Bryant, president
of the Alumni Association of the U.S.
Naval Academy Metro Detroit Chapter,
gave a brief talk about Uriah Phillips
Levy, who was the only Jew to achieve
the rank of flag officer during the
American Civil War. However, Levy's
most lasting contribution was in the
area of social reform. He provided
examples on his own ships of how
humane treatment of sailors made for
better and more efficient operating
conditions.
To honor Veterans Day, the B'nai
Moshe Men's Club, in conjunction with
the Michigan Region of the Federation
of Jewish Men's Clubs, is raising money
to provide Jewish service men and
women with a personal spiritual kit
consisting of a nondenominational
prayer book, a pocket Tanach and a
kippah.
The inscription in the prayer book
reads, "Dedicated to the gallant men
and women of the Jewish faith who
serve God and country in the Armed
Forces of the United States." Although
these pocket-sized prayer books are
available for distribution to American
Jewish military personnel, private
donations are necessary to pay for
them.
The B'nai Moshe Men's Club is rais-
ing money for the kits, which cost $10
each. To help, send checks to the Men's
Club of Congregation B'nai Moshe,
6800 Drake Rd., West Bloomfield, MI
48322. Put "Military Spiritual Kit" on
your check.
