Initially, the main goal of the U-
M/Israel Partnership for Scientific
Research was to provide travel funds
so collaborating U-M and Israeli
scientists could visit each other, said
Saltiel, who has strong ties to Israel's
scientific community.
But the partnership soon took on
new challenges, sponsoring symposia,
seminars and innovative programs
like Camp Evolution and the Genetic
Inheritance Project.
Camp Evolution is a two-week
genetics and evolutionary-biol-
ogy course hosted by Ben-Gurion
University at the Blaustein Institutes
for Desert Research in Sede Boker,
Israel. The Genetic Inheritance
Project is a collaborative effort, led
by LSI computational biologist Noah
Rosenberg, to map genetic inheritance
across Israeli populations.
Awarding the first round of coop-
erative research grants starts the
next phase in the evolution of the
U-M/Israel Partnership for Scientific
Research.
"We think this thing is really going
to explode, because the benefits are
just so great for both sides:' Saltiel
said.
