Fight Sleep Apnea I is called the silent killer — obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 42 million Americans suffer from this chronic disorder, which affects sleep and wakefulness. Annually, sleep dis- orders, sleep deprivation and sleepi- ness add an estimated $16 billion to the national health care bill. OSA is a potentially life-threatening breathing disorder with serious health consequences, including excessive daytime sleepiness, cognitive dis- turbances, depression, hypertension, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. OSA is as prevalent as adult diabetes and asthma and conservative estimates indicate that nearly 10 mil- lion Americans remain undiagnosed. The typical answer for those with OSA meant wearing a cumbersome mask called a continuous positive air- way pressure device or CPAP. It is basi- cally a big, uncomfortable mask worn over the nose or face, which gently blows air into the back of the throat, keeping the airway open. Thanks to new advancements in the study and treatment of OSA, a new, smaller, oral OSA appliance is now available; it can be found in an unusual place — the dentist's office. The new device is worn at bedtime and gently moves the lower jaw for- ward, opening the airway, which allows the person to breathe all night without snoring. Studies have shown a 93 per- cent success rate with the new appli- ance as compared to a 50 percent rate with CPAP. "Our roles as dentists are being redefined as the profession grows:' says Dr. Earl Bogrow of Bogrow and Associates in Southfield. "Our profession is morphing into being oral health specialists. We con- sult with our OSA patients to see if they are right for this type of appli- ance. We also perform oral cancer screenings and look for malformities in the mouth!" Wrning signs for sleep apnea or OSA are: • Excessive snoring • Having a need to take daytime naps • Falling asleep at a red light • Falling asleep at movies or while watching TV • Lack of concentration during the day. Factors that can lead to OSA are obesity, heavy drinking, heavy smok- ing, too much fat in the back of the throat and large tonsils in children. These factors coupled with OSA can lead to congestive heart failure, stroke, irregular heart beat, cardiovascular disease and car accidents. Studies show that OSA patients with high blood pressure can get off their HBP meds by using this new appli- ance, Bogrow says. ❑ Peter Nielsen (Host of Peter's Principles) is available for Exclusive Private one on one Personal Training and Nutritional Counseling.
