T
he Jewish Football League,
which just completed its fifth
season, is seeking more play-
ers and teams for next year.
League founder Stu Freedland's
vision of a competitive but friendly
non-contact flag football league for
Jewish men age 30 and older became
a reality in fall 2005. Games have been
played each fall since then, in addition
to a spring season in 2006.
"I started the league for two rea-
sons," Freedland said. "I love football.
I love watching it and playing it. And
I thought a league would be a great
addition to the Jewish community. It
gives guys an opportunity to develop
friendships and even do some busi-
ness networking."
There were four teams and 33 play-
ers this fall. There have been as many
as six teams and more than 40 players
in a season. Freedland would love to
see the league grow to eight teams,
and more than word-of-mouth is
needed to achieve that goal.
Registration fee is $30 for returning
players and $50 for new players. The
extra $20 is for a league jersey. Players
of all football experience levels are
welcome.
The league championship game has
been played on the turf football field at
West Bloomfield High School the past
three seasons. Regular-season games
have been played the last two seasons at
Pioneer Park in Farmington Hills.
Games are 5-on-5, played on a 50-
yard field with end zones that are 10
yards deep. Freedland was the referee
for this year's playoff championship
game, but normally there isn't a ref.
League player Adam Ellis said that
may change.
"Even though the honor system
works fine, it would be nice to have
referees eventually," Ellis said. "There
are going to be arguments anytime
you get 10 Jewish guys together, but
there has never been a punch thrown."
"Cooler heads always prevail;'
Freedland said. "The guys are out there
to have fun:'
Team captains select players in a draft.
This year's captains were Paul Gedrich,
Aric Melder, Ross Niskar and Ellis,
whose team had the best regular-season
record (6-1) and won the league title
with a 26-20 win over Niskar's squad in
the championship game.
Dan Collins, the quarterback of
Ellis' team, threw three touchdown
passes (two to Ellis) in the playoff
finale, and he scored on a 50-yard run
on the game's first play.
Niskar, who quarterbacked his team,
ran for two touchdowns and he threw
to a touchdown pass to 67-year-old
Ben Alalouf, whose devastating block
during another play remains the talk
of the league.
"You usually see a block like that
