then creates heat by generating friction
through the vibration of water mol-
ecules. In 10 minutes or less, the tumor
literally disappears as it is destroyed.
This treatment method is more effec-
tive at killing cancer cells in the liver
than any other modality. Although it's
similar to radio frequency therapy abla-
tion (RFA), microwave technology will
probably replace RFA as a treatment
option. It is that effective.
Microwave ablation produces much
higher temperatures within the tumor
than RFA and is therefore more effec-
tive at eradicating the cancerous cells.
This is significant due to the highly
vascular nature of the liver. Large blood
vessels near the tumor can keep the
temperature within the tumor lower,
limiting the effectiveness of other
forms of ablation.
We have had several patients with
diseased livers in whom we have effec-
tively ablated liver tumors laparoscopi-
cally with a hospital stay of two to three
days. These patients were not candi-
dates for transplantation because of the
tumor size or number of tumors. They
were very poor candidates for surgery
because the condition of their liver
would not tolerate major surgery.
For patients, this treatment option is
less stressful. The speed and efficiency
of microwave therapy often means less
time in surgery, less blood loss and less
time spent under anesthesia. Cancerous
cells are destroyed, while healthy tissue
remains intact.
