Eager to become a full- time coach, Friedman applied unsuccessfully for several college coaching jobs. Finally, in 1932, he accepted a job as player- coach for the pro Brooklyn Dodgers, who played on Ebbets Field like their namesake baseball team. However, Friedman's performance on the field began to slip; and when new owners bought the team, they installed some- one else as coach, retaining Friedman as the team's quarterback. Since his interest in coaching was strong, Friedman stopped play- ing in 1934 and became the coach at City College of New York. The playing field (Lewisohn Stadium) was not very good, and football was overshadowed at City College by bas- ketball under the popular Nat Holman. Moreover, athletics at City College were clearly secondary to education. Friedman kept looking for other coaching jobs to no avail. Finally, in 1942, he joined the Navy and saw combat in the South Pacific. After the war, the Friedmans moved to Detroit, where he ran a Jeep auto dealership. In 1948, Friedman accepted a job as athletic director, football coach and fundraiser at newly established Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. When the school began to gain aca- demic respectability, the administra- tion and faculty questioned the neces- sity for a football team; and, in 1960, it was eliminated. Friedman stayed on as ath- letic director for two years and then resigned. He ran a summer camp in Maine and also taught high-school quarterbacks how to improve their performance. Finally, in poor health and in despair that he might lose his other leg, Friedman shot himself. He died Nov. 23, 1982, 57 years to the day he'd been elected as the first Jewish captain of the Michigan Wolverines. During his lifetime, Friedman wrote many letters to sport editors for their consideration in admitting him to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He never got the call. But in 2005, Friedman finally emerged as a "senior status" finalist and was voted and inducted into the hall of fame, just 60 miles from where he grew up and had been born 100 years earlier.
