Letters Cold War Memory I read with interest "Medical Barrier" (Nov. 6, page A14) and was reminded of an experience I had during the Cold War. In the early 1960s I was an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University in St. Louis. The Berlin Wall had recently been erect- ed, blocking East Berlin from the West. I had recently heard of a powerful new microscope called a colposcope (named Kolpopot by the manufac- turer) that had been developed in East Berlin and was unfortunately unavail- able anywhere else. I was aware that this colposcope would be an excellent device to determine whether gyneco- logical cells were pre-cancerous. Coincidently there was a resident in the obstetrics and gynecology pro- gram who was from West Berlin and had a sister living in East Berlin. He was planning a trip back to his home and arranged for his sister to buy the colposcope. Because it was impos- sible to be with his sister in the same city the siblings arranged to meet at a specific place in the Wall where they would be able to talk. The sister had convinced someone to take apart the colposcope into little pieces. The sib- lings met several times in the course of the doctor's visit and each time parts of the colposcope were secretly passed to the doctor. The doctor was able to obtain all the pieces and bring them back to St. Louis. An engineer at Washington University assembled the colposcope and converted it from 220v to battery operated. The beauty of this instru- ment was that it was able to locate abnormal cells which might become malignant. It was now possible to prevent cancer by performing biopsies instead of using radiation and/or sur- gery when cancer developed. Barack Obama, D-Ill., as the next presi- dent of the United States of America. We feel he will be a real friend to Israel and help in the establishment of two separate states living together in peace, which our organization supports. For far too long, the right wing of the Jewish community has attempted to influence the U.S. government to support unrealistic demands of the religious minority in Israel. We believe the incoming govern- ment of President-elect Obama will further the process of helping Arabs and Israelis to live together in peace, so that Israel can be, as we old-time Zionists always dreamed, "a light unto the world." Baruch Schiff vice president, Ameinu Detroit Huntington Woods Barack And Barak At the height of the Barack Obama- Hillary Clinton primary battle, I drew a comparison between them and the biblical Barak ben Avinoam, the mili- tary man, and Deborah, the judge and prophetess, a biblical ruler of Israel. As we are told in Sefer Shoftim (Book of Judges), Deborah called upon Barak to go to war against the enemy of oppression. Barak's response to Deborah: "If you go with me, then I will go". Well, Deborah had no choice but to say "yes"; the war ended with Israel's victory, which is immortalized in the "Song of Deborah," one of the Hebrew Bible's most beautiful liturgies. I remember how inspired I was by the similarity of the two stories. I had an idea that whoever should attain the Democratic nomination for president should choose the other for VP At the time, I believed that it would be Hillary- Deborah who would call upon Barack to run along with her. When recent rumors strengthened of Hillary Clinton as a potential appointee as Secretary of State, I decided that my initial idea of the collaboration between the two was very much possible. Don't think that the Tanach (Hebrew Bible) is irrelevant to modern times. Again and again, we have proof of how relevant it really is; how, in spite of the distance of time, human nature and relations between people remain the same. Thus, the Tanach is called the Book of Books, the one we have cher- ished throughout our history.
