Berkley team wins
on and off the court.

C oath Lenny Waldman is just
as proud of what his Berkley
High School boys tennis
team achieved off the court as on the
court this season.
On the court, the Bears went 9-
1-1 overall and 5-0 in the Oakland
Activities Association Blue Division in
dual matches. Despite finishing sec-
ond by one point to Royal Oak in the
division tournament, the Bears earned
a share of the division title, the team's
first league championship since 2002.
Off the court, Berkley earned All-
Academic team honors from the
Michigan High School Tennis Coaches
Association. The Bears' regional tour-
nament lineup had a combined 3.5
grade point average for the previous
semester.
The four members of Berkley's all-
Jewish singles lineup each had a solid
season.
Senior co-captain Jacob Goodman,
who played No. 1 singles for the
second consecutive year, split his 10
matches against opposing teams' top
players.
"Playing No. 1 singles is a tough
job, but Jacob never complained;'
Waldman said. "His attitude was, 'It's a
great day to play tennis:"
Team was No. 1 in Goodman's
thoughts. "One of our team's goals
was winning the league champion-
ship so '2008' could be added to our
banner in the gym, and we did it;'
said Goodman, who played tennis for
Detroit in this summer's JCC Maccabi
Games.
Senior Paul Braverman was
Berkley's No. 2 singles player, and
the other co-captain. "Paul is a great
thinker. He brings his mind on the
court with him," Waldman said.
Junior Brian Schubiner played No.
3 singles. He was named team MVP
by Waldman after winning nine of his
10 matches. "Brian is our leading can-
didate for the No. 1 singles spot next
season," Waldman said.
Senior Max White played No. 4
singles and he also went 9-1. Waldman
named White, a four-year player, the

Schubiner and White each won their
flight at the OAA Blue tournament, as
did senior Andrew Ackner at No. 1
doubles.
Goodman and Ackner are two-
time All-OAA players. Goodman,
Braverman, White and Ackner were
named to the All-OAA Academic Team
for having a minimum 3.5 GPA.
For Andy's Family
A memorial dinner and bowling tour-
nament in honor of B'nai B'rith bowler
Andy Rubin will be held Dec. 5 at
Country Lanes in Farmington Hills.
Rubin died Oct. 11 at age 56 after
suffering a heart attack during a
Pisgah/Zeiger League bowling night
Sept. 25 at Country Lanes. He's sur-
vived by his wife and two sons.
Despite what happened Sept. 25,
dinner/tournament organizers feel
Country Lanes is the perfect spot
to hold the event. Rubin rolled nine
300 games and four 800 series in his
bowling career, and all took place at
Country Lanes.
Proceeds from the dinner and tour-
nament will go to Rubin's family.
Dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m. and
bowling will start at 9 p.m. Bowling
will be three games of nine-pin no tap.
Cost for dinner only is $10. Cost for
dinner and bowling is $25. Children
14 and under are $10.
