They don't require chimneys or hearths, but probably should not be installed in smaller rooms because the heat could be overwhelming, he adds, noting that most ventless fireplaces are installed in basements. The large variety of styles, designs and accoutrements are numbing, start- ing with mantels. They are all the rage as they define the architectural style of the interior decor and make a state- ment for their owners. Brown says he has 1,000 different mantels on display, in granite, wood, marble, limestone or stainless steel. The medium-priced mantels range from $2,500 to $5,000, including instal- lation. Other mantels start around $900. Then there is the vast array and greater choice of what Brown calls "jew- elry" — grates, andirons, pokers, bel- lows and gloves. "You're buying some- thing artificial to look good 98 percent of the time," he says. American Fireplace is doing a lot of refacing of fireplaces where it takes the brick wall from an existing fireplace and either strips it or makes it over. The company also is building fireplaces in physi- cian waiting rooms, conference rooms, retirement centers, convalescent centers and car dealerships. Flame chambers soared in popular- ity in recent years once Underwriters Laboratories approved the new format shape and size, Schaerer says. Glass beads and crushed volcanic ash replaced fake logs and create a spec- tacular light display when gas shoots through them. By using optional materials, such as stone in geometric shapes or cannon- balls stacked in the shape of a pyramid, the resulting light show is even more dazzling, he says. Most of Schaerer's clients have at least four fireplaces, many of which are in the new format, measuring 60 inches long and 24-26 inches high. One of Schaerer's clients in,Orchard Lake Village owns five fireplaces, including one in the bedroom that Schaerer says costs around $45,000. "It's100 percent style the customer says. "I wasn't going to bring in wood. I wanted the look of a fireplace and the sounds of the flames:'
