Kratchman will be honored at the 23rd annual Governor's Awards for Arts & Culture (the Guvvys) on Nov. 13 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The award is presented each year to an individ- ual who dedicates Barbara his or her time, Krachtman talents, energies and persever- ance toward advocating the arts and culture in Michigan through exceptional leadership, promotional, volunteer, administrative, legislative or professional efforts. Kratchman served as founding president of ArtServe Michigan from 1997 to 2007. She was instrumen- tal in guiding the merger of Arts Foundation of Michigan, Business Volunteers for the Arts, Concerned Citizens for the Arts in Michigan and the Michigan Alliance for Arts Education that founded ArtServe Michigan in 1997. In her role as president, she also provided significant leadership in the more recent merger of ArtServe Michigan and the Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies, which formed the new ArtServe in October 2006, strength- ening the role of ArtServe Michigan to advocate for arts, culture and creativity in Michigan and its com- munities. Kratchman served as executive director of the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs from 1985-1991, following several years in the Michigan Department of Commerce. Under Kratchman's leadership, ArtServe started the GrassRoots Arts Advocacy Network Distribution (GRAAND) in 2002.
