T

he Historical Society of
Michigan presented its 2008
State History Award in the
category of Educational Programs
to the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan for its bus tour program,
"Settlers to Citizens: the Jews of
Detroit and Michigan, 1761-Today"
The award was presented on
Sept. 26 at the annual State History
Conference in Grand Rapids. The
State History Award signifies the high-
est recognition by the state's official
historical society and oldest cultural
organization.
Designed for fifth- and sixth-grade
students from various religious
and day schools in the Detroit area,
the regularly scheduled "Settlers
to Citizens" bus tours take young
students into the long-ago past of a
Detroit they may have never dreamed
existed, so they can imagine for

themselves what life was like for early
Jewish immigrants in Michigan.
"Settlers to Citizens" is values-based,
emphasizing the significant contribu-
tions made by early Jewish settlers in
Michigan, not only for their families and
the Jewish people, but for their commu-
nities as well. The tour emphasizes the
concept that pride in one's heritage is a
stepping stone that guides young people
to become contributing citizens to a
wider community.
The award comes on the eve of
another high point in the JHSM's his-
tory: celebration of the organization's
50th anniversary in 2009.
The JHSM is marking the occasion
by bringing to Detroit the Library
of Congress exhibit, "From Haven
to Home: 350 Years of Jewish Life in
America," which will be displayed in
the Detroit Historical Museum from
early May through August 2009.
