center. While restoring
the library, the volunteers found old
prayer books written in Yiddish and
Spanish.
Katz said the presence of young
Jewish volunteers was so powerful
because the young people have been
leaving, and the economic situation
of Jews there has gotten worse over
the years. Students gave their time
and their support for one week and,
in return, learned among other things
how to dance the tango.
Michelle Ellis, a junior from West
Bloomfield, experienced a different
type of vacation with Hillel's trip to
Buenos Aires.
"Typically, when I travel I never get
to sit down and meet local people and
experience their customs and culture
firsthand," said Ellis. "I was amazed
by the people in the community, how
grateful they were for everything we
did and especially how important
being Jewish is for there
Alternative breaks offer Jewish stu-
dents of diverse interests something
they can enjoy, that they've never done
before. Lieberman said, 'Alternative
spring breaks allow you to go outside
the box and travel a new path of tik-
kun olam (repairing the world)."
Over next winter break, MSU Hillel
will be traveling to Savannah, Ga.,

home of one of the oldest Jewish
communities in the country, dating
back to 1733. This break will provide
students an opportunity to work on an
urban organic farm, where they focus
on growing healthy, inexpensive, sus-
tainable food options for low-income
residents.
Michael Gallagher, an education
major from Haslett, Mich., will be
traveling on his first Hillel Alternative
Break when he travels to Savannah.
"I just see it as a bonus that the pro-
gram is through a Jewish organization
and I get to have a positive effect on
Savannah, while spending time with
students who are Jewish at the same
time
"When else can you go to a different
place for a week with a group of Jewish
strangers who truly become family, to
help a Jewish community?" said Ellis.
"Going with Hillel and helping other
Jews made the trip a lot more personal
