Those interested in having that same kind of support during their own race should take note of a free kickoff party and fundraising open house at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Holiday Resort Hotel in Southfield. The host is Team In Training, the White Plains, N.Y.-based Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's sports endurance program. The celebration will mark the beginning of the 2009 spring sea- son of TNT and will provide oppor- tunities for the public to learn more about upcoming athletic events for beginning or seasoned walkers, run- ners and triathletes. "I was really impressed with training and coaching Team In Training offered," Eisenberg says about experience with TNT during the Vancouver Marathon earlier this year. "At the race, everything was taken care of — meals before the race, getting to the site and tons of people cheered for me during the race." Eisenberg, 45, ran the Vancouver Marathon in support of three friends and family members who have blood cancer. Their struggles kept her deter- mined while training for the race on cold Saturday mornings at Kensington Metro Park near Milford. "Some days, I didn't want to get up and do the training," she says. "Then I thought my honored heroes never had a break from their cancer or treat- ments, so why should I." Eisenberg will start training with TNT once again as she prepares for the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati next May. The Flying Pig Marathon is one of five events people can learn more about at the Nov. 12 kickoff meeting. The kickoff starts with the open house at 6 p.m. that includes informa- tion about Team In Training spring events and how to register for them. A party follows at 7 p.m. Attendees can pick up LLS literature, fundraising supplies and learn more about suc- cessful fundraising ideas. During the evening, TNT partici- pants will meet their mentor, coaches, Andrea Eisenberg honored hero and TNT staff. Coaches will share training information and participants will have a chance to dis- cuss any questions or concerns. Recruitment begins later this month for spring events, which include walk- ing or running events such as the Flying Pig Marathon & Half Marathon; the Country Music Marathon & Half Marathon in Nashville; and the BMO Bank of Montreal Vancouver Marathon & Half Marathon in Vancouver. Triathlon events for athletes of all abilities include the Olympic-distance St. Anthony's 'Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the half-Ironman Gulf Coast Triathlon in Panama City Beach, Fla. Team In Training will hold informa- tion meetings across Metro Detroit during the next two weeks where those interested can learn about and register for TNT programs. Eisenberg will be the featured alumni speaker at the information meeting to be held at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield on Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. For information, including signup dates and locations, call (248) 581-3942 or visit wwwteamintraining.org/mi. Since TNT's inception in 1988, 360,000 participants have raised $850 million to help fund blood cancer research and provide services and support to patients and their families. 1_11 - For more information about blood cancer, visit www.LLS. org or call the LLS Information Resource Center.
