Now 23 years later, that small min- yan is known as the Birmingham- Bloomfield Chai Center, meeting at the Birmingham Masonic Temple. This year brings another first for the Chai Center. It will be holding its first annual dinner at 6 p.m. Sunday, NOV. 23 — with a 5 p.m. pre-glow reception — at the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club in Bloomfield Hills. The evening's honorees will be Eileen and Jerry Borsand. Guest speaker is well- known author/lecturer/radio host Rabbi Shumley Boteach. This year's cel- ebration is seen as a "friend-raiser" to gain more vis- ibility for the center. The event is Rabbi Boteach chaired by two of the Borsand's five children, Dena Borsand of Oak Park and Yosi Borsand of Farmington Hills, an attorney. Before the arrival of Rabbi Boruch Cohen, Yosi often served the congregation by leading services and giving sermons. For many years, the shul has bat- tled challenges like small member- ship, sometimes unable to procure the requisite 10 men for a minyan, and fluctuating leadership. The late Rabbi Moshe Poker served as resident rabbi for many of the early years, followed by his sons Rabbis Dovid, Yechiel and Yochanan Polter. But four years ago, the Borsands handed the helm to Rabbi Cohen and his wife, Ita Leah. They have a lofty mission: connection. The Cohens have brought a con- nection with grassroots Judaism and spirituality. "I think that the Chai Center has tapped into a certain vibe from the Baal Shem Tov, one that perhaps eludes some bigger institutions;'
